the girl with a pearl earring

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I thought it strange, and oddly intriguing, that people are more often categorized by what they wear than who they are. I started thinking about this when I saw this painting in some place or another. I have to admit though, I have gained the terrible habit of noticing stranger's clothing before their faces, although i guess that could be expected seeing as one's face takes up all of about one seventh of our bodies. Still, interesting.

spray on

I've decided that a lot of artwork which is heavily reliant, not on still or craftsmanship, but on it's concept can either epically fail or really move people. I love some of Banksy's indoor stuff, because he doesn't spend time and effort deciding how to 'portray the statement'. He just sprays his concept right onto a wall.

the invisible man

I love this sort of artwork which makes you "double take" when you see it. This work is by Liu Bolin, who is commonly referred to as "The Invisible Man".

Photoshop-ing is literally an art form now. See above; Erik Johansson, a Swedish artist who uses digitally manipulated photographs to display impossible yet lovely situations. Honestly, who doesn't want a floating bed? I went thought a big craze when I was little where I desperately wanted a water bed, but that's really just one step better.

The New Yorker

As Anna is away, and I'm back from my snow holiday, I'm going to have to step up my game! I love the New Yorker, simply because every single page of it is attention-grabbing and interesting, so one doesn't skip multiple pages at a time trying to find something the slightest bit intriguing. Here is a front cover of an issue from February 4th, 1939, and one from 2009. I love how little it's changed.

skill + coordination = art

I adore this artist, and in particular this work. Fine art to me, is the most effective expression of one's self. A single line can tell more than a whole novel, when interpreted the right way, or even the wrong way. It can show anything that one's coordination and artistic skill can put to paper.

down the river

I love this. I can't imagine how many hours that would have taken. I think there is something extra special about dainty, fiddly little things like this. It reminds me of fairies somehow. Of infanthood.
